These pebbles are polished pieces of larger septarian nodules. They consist of a clay-rich nodule that developed a rigid outer shell while the interior dehydrated and shrank, leaving polygonal cracks. The interior of the nodule later filled with calcite crystals. These nodules occur in various locations around the world and their exact method of formation is still debated.
